Register.com Sucks

Before Godaddy was in business, Register.com was a good option when choosing where to register a domain name. Not Anymore!

Their old fashioned methods (high pressure phone sales) are completely not customer friendly. My gripe is with the process of transferring a domain away from them and to another registrar. They put as many obstacles in your way as possible.

One of my domains lumberpost.com was about to expire and I wanted to move it to GoDaddy.com. Pretty simple eh. I had private registration enabled with register.com so I wouldn't have my personal email and address available to spammers and junk mailers. You have to make a phone call to register.com to get your auth code and that means a 30 minute wait on hold. Oh and of course you better call during normal business hours. Great, I got the auth code after being asked 50 questions about why I wanted to transfer away and telling me that their higher cost is due to outstanding tech support. Well let's see I have had domains registered for over 10 years and can't recall a time when I ever had to call tech support for a domain name! So they say, "well did you call us before you signed up with Godaddy and let us offer you a special?" Well, um no. Well sir we can offer you special prices over the phone. How nice, so I have to call and wait on hold for 30 minutes just to ask if I can have the phone only special? I like the other option better...I can just search for Godaddy coupon code google and then add that to an already low price with Godaddy and not have to talk with anyone on the phone. Now that we have that out of the way I proceed to transfer the domain but never receive my transfer emails from Godaddy. You see since I have private registration turned on at register.com when godaddy.com sends the transfer email to the contact on file using the special email address provided by register.com it never gets to me. Great, after looking through the register.com account screens it becomes apparent that I will have to call them again.... UGH. so here we go again 30 minutes on hold and 50 questions about why I am transferring my domain. I told the agent I wanted to remove the private registration so I could complete my transfer because I felt that the Godaddy transfer emails weren’t getting through. He told me that I might be correct. He said "We consider private companies like Godaddy.com spammers and block those emails."

I hope my experience can help others make the right choice and not use register.com.
